#178-G123 ~ Galatians 6:6 continued
Our study here begins in verse six where we have a statement about giving in support of those who serve in teaching God’s Word. What a sensitive subject giving is with so many people! We are in a passage where giving is the subject matter. This verse and the next four verses are about this.
There are all kinds of ways you can give, not just money. Currently, there are 3 articles on our website about giving—
Giving: What are the basics on giving?
Giving: What are the principles for the believer?
Giving: Are believers supposed to tithe?
In these articles you’ll find nearly everything you need to know about giving. If you want more details on this subject, please go to the articles on our website.
1st Principle: There was a time when God’s people, the Israelites were commanded [it was a national law] to give 3 tithes (plural), not just one.
Malachi 3:10
10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse [the Jewish temple treasury], that there may be meat [food] in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. [This is a promise for abundant material blessing that we’re not given today.]
Please see my article: Blessing: Does God now promise material blessing for godly living?
Philippians 4:19
19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus. He will sustain you to be able to do His work.
Please note that this promise speaks of needs, not wants.
2nd Principle: We are free to give as we have prospered.
1 Corinthians 16:1-2
1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye.
2 Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.
2 Corinthians 9:7-8
7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
8 And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency [AUTARKEIA = sufficient, enough] in all things, may abound to every good work:
3nd Principle: We are to give willingly [not by coercion].
2 Corinthians 8:12
12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
4th Principle: We are to give responsibly.
1 Timothy 5:17-18
17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine.
18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.
1 Corinthians 9:9-11
9 For it is written in the law of Moses, thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.
11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
I conclude here but continue with this in our next study.
