#176-G121 ~ Envy! What a terrible sin believers are to avoid!
This is the beginning of a parenthetical study of what the Bible tells us about jealousy. This study will serve as a bridge from Galatians 5 to Galatians 6. Here’s a basic outline of this video.
We begin with our first point being a definition. 1-It is a mental attitude sin that demands exclusive devotion and is intolerant of rivalry. 2-It is discontent of the blessings or status symbols of other people. 3–It is resentment of the approbation that someone else receives. 4–In Old English, jealousy had the connotation of one demanding exclusive devotion. This last use is no longer common in modern English. When the Bible says God is a jealous God it is speaking of His demand for an exclusive love. However, this study will be confined to the SIN of jealousy.
Some practical principles about envy and jealousy—
1-Jealousy is found in both unbelievers and believers, not just unbelievers. As unbelievers—Romans 1:28-29; Titus 3:3-5 and Acts 17:5 As believers–Romans 13:12-14; 1 Corinthians 3:2-3; 2 Corinthians 12:20-21; Philippians 1:14-15
2-Jealousy and envy can spring from teaching that’s not consistent with the teachings of Christ through the apostle Paul. 1 Timothy 6:3-5; Acts 13:45
3-Jealousy is sometimes the evil motivation for people to present the gospel message. Acts 13:45
We will continue this study on jealousy in our next video.
